Why UK Needs a Written Constitution. Urgently.

The UK is governed by an assortment of laws, traditions, and treaties, which are called “The Constitution.” No comprehensive document exists, but the underlying premise is the supremacy of Parliament.

They passed a Human Rights Act in 1998 which includes freedom of speech, but violations cannot be enforced by courts as only Parliament has the last word.

It has worked pretty well.

Until now.

An existential clash with increasingly powerful Muslim interests has damaged freedom of speech. People are being jailed for opinions and nonviolent protests critical of Islam in the UK. Since Parliament is unwilling to act, no remedy is in sight.

Fears of a civil war are starting to be expressed.

A written Constitution, passed by a national referendum, would give the courts the ability to overrule Parliamentary malfeasance, as is the case in the US. This referendum would be similar to the Brexit vote, which overruled the political establishment and severed their connection with the European Union.

The current ruling party, Labour, is wildly unpopular and is deaf to the calls for reform, but they are not required to call for a new election for four more years. The Conservative Party has collapsed after years of misrule. A brand new party, Reform, is soaring in the polls.

Britain doesn’t have four more years.

The time for a written Constitution is now. Right now, please.
