For someone whose writing has been prophetic, witty and powerful, his pathetic formal education should have been fatal to any career, especially writing. He left King Edward’s school in England at an early age, and did not attend a college or university.
His first media job was as a disk jockey.
But his natural power with the English language led him to writing on politics for such titans as The Daily Telegraph, National Review, and The Jerusalem Post. He combined deep research with a savage wit, a potent combination.
In 2006 he published a book, America Alone, a clarion call for the ages. He shouted from the rooftops about the dangers to Western Civilization of:
-- Demographic Decline, especially compared to the high birth rates of Muslim immigrants.
-- Civilizational exhaustion, with European nations too focused on moral relativism and diversity and the cost of defending their core values.
-- That left America to preserve Western civilization, provided it maintained its core values.
After almost 20 years, the clarity of his vision has become self-evident. The takeover of Europe by Islam is surging, resulting in political earthquakes in Germany, England and France, even as the non-Muslim birthrates are well below the maintenance rates of 2.1 children per couple. This trend is not easy to salvage.
Big media ignored his thesis. Fox news was a natural home, but the offer never came. He was a permanent fill-in for Rush Limbaugh for years, but that led nowhere.
He is a Canadian and got in trouble with the speech police there over his views.
He became a resident of New Hampshire, which became his operating base. He published Lights Out, Free Speech and the Twilight of the West (2009), After America, Get Ready for the Armageddon (2011), and The Undocumented Mark Steyn: Don’t Say You Weren’t Warned (2014), among other gems.
He created a strong online presence with his Mark Steyn Online posts, and has developed a devoted following. Full library at www.steynonline.com/mark-steyn-show.
He finally got a regular broadcasting job with a startup in the UK, but got canned for political reasons.
He has sacrificed his health along with way, suffering several heart attacks.
But he carries on, unbowed and unvanquished, an inspiration to all who care about the future of our civilization.
Savor him while you can.
